Years ago, in my early twenties, I hit a desperate point: I had no money to pay for the rent for my small studio apartment, and I’d missed half the month before. The building manager had advocated for me with the building owner, but we both knew it had to come to an end, and he gave me my notice to move as quickly as possible.
