MOST college instructors now work on contract for salaries that their students would find unacceptable. The workload has increased exponentially, and many work at more than one institution to make ends meet. It's no longer what it used to be. Your understanding of it is at least 15 years out of date. I walked away from it two years ago, after giving them 14 years of my life. As I read this article, I recognized that the prof--probably untenured--is losing his or her mind with this... and I know the feeling. I've taught FT and never made more than 50k, and most years was between 24 and 36k. At a "top 40" institution. Grade school teachers with a graduate degree make more in their first year.
