My son is a singer. As he went through music school he studied jazz and American Songbook material... but he--always a history buff--began to go to earlier tunes, and has absolutely fallen for the music of the 30s. He listens and studies, and is true to the feel. I feel the salve in his music--I do think it's a result of those years and the need to be human and feel joy. Yes, that was a very tough decade.
