My writing workshops were a real mix. For one, I was the last hold-out in the program to mix MFA grads and undergrads. It took some thought, but worked to both humble and challenge. I also worked with UBC's amazing MA in Children's Literature, a one-off program world-over that incorporated four disciplines, including creative writing. Amongst those students in particular, were "older" professionals, teachers and librarians, who were there purely on passion. So yes, you are right in thinking those novels were born of the urge to create.

My workshops were year-long, 6 credit, so entire novels could be born, if one put in serious effort. By the time I left, all classes had been cut to one-term, 3 credit classes in which one could hand in only 2 pieces; students were lucky to work on the first two chapters. And when I left, the faculty were seriously considering allowing unfinished theses to be acceptable. (!)

If you can't finish a project, it's unlikely you'll be able to write.

It's just sad.

So now my newsletter is The Unschool for Writers... of course.

Wishing you the best in your new life. I do enjoy mine. I miss much, but ex-students have wonderful ways of popping up... often with book launch invites, even! Or a cup of coffee and inspiring chat, too--that can be enough!
